Shakira Fights for the Youth

Posted by admin on Jun 19, 2009

In case you missed it, the New York Times Magazine included a great article all about Shakira and Alas, the foundation the Colombian singer and other stars launched in 2006 to combat childhood poverty. In the story, editor Scott Malcomson writes about a flight from Miami to San Salvador in which he joined Shakira and Spanish vocalist Alejandro Sanz, who were flying over to attend an Ibero-American summit meeting and speak about early child development to Latin American leaders. The story focuses on Shakira’s efforts to defend the young: “When a child is born poor, he will die poor, unless he receives an opportunity. That opportunity is education. It’s that helping hand that they’re looking for. Latin America is a young continent, it’s malleable, it’s flexible. We still can change,” she told Malcolmson, who notes that “she is not someone whom it would be reasonable to underestimate.” Thanks to Latina.com for this find!

A publicist for the Colombian star however insists she has no plans to leave her musical home. “(The rumours are) not true. She’s very happy at Epic,” said the representative.

Shakira Shows Her Support for Mexico

Paulina Rubio and a bunch of Mexican famosos recently showed their support for Mexico, when the country got a lot of bad press over the swine flu saga. Now Colombiana Shakira wants to let Pau and other Mexican celebrities know that they’re not alone. El Financiero reports that while she was filming a music video in Los Angeles, Shakira sported a T-shirt that said, “Muñecas como ésta vacacionan en México.” With Latin babes like Shaki and Pau giving their approval, it’s only a matter of time before this stigma is removed and the Mexican tourism industry is back on its feet. Fake emails unlawfully using the name of newspaper El Universal are sent to users alerting them of the spicy (but unfortunately for those interested) nonexistent video. Users are advised not to click on the link to the fictional video as it may contain a virus.
