When it comes down to it, many English speaking fans may be surprised to learn that Shakira has been making music since the mid-1990s. While most American’s know Shakira from the pop music she’s been putting out in English for the last decade or so, she was actually a very popular Spanish language musician before she even made a dent in the Pop music landscape. In fact, Shakira’s Spanish language albums have sold more than 25-million records world-wide.
As for the English language music, Shakira’s first, and arguably biggest hit, was “Whenever, Wherever,” a song from her 2001 album “Laundry Service” song which is still heavily downloaded. Other popular songs from that album include “Underneath Your Clothes” and “Objection (Tango).”
In 2005 and 2006 Sharkia released Oral Fixation Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 records, with the biggest hit from both albums being the song “Hip’s Don’t Lie,” which featured backing vocals from Wyclef Jean, formally of the Fugees. The song “La Tortura” also found commercial success from those records, as it became a top ten hit thanks, in part, to its guest appearance from Latin artist Alejandro Sanz. In the years since Shakira has had a handful of other hits including “Beautiful Liar,” which features guest vocals by Beyonce, and “She Wolf.”
