“Earlier today we toddled over to Sony’s London HQ for an early bird listen to the new Shakira single. Readers, we were not disappointed. Though ‘She-Wolf’ features some clearly discernible reference points, including an intro that brings to mind ‘Filthy/Gorgeous’ by Scissor Sisters and a strong disco influence, it sounds like nothing else in the charts at the moment. There’s a massive amount to take in the first time you hear it, but after two or three plays we were both completely hooked.
The track begins with a pelvis-teasing bassline and guitar licks that would have done the business at Studio 54, before the chorus takes it an entirely unexpected direction. “There’s a she-wolf in the closet, open up and set her free,” an overdubbed Shakira sings. “There’s a she-wolf in the closet, let it out so we can breathe.” There’s also a fantastic middle 8 that pushes the track into filter disco territory and a flourish of strings towards the finish, before ‘She-Wolf’ concludes, three minutes after it started, with some lusty panting.
Oh yes, and did we mention it’s a bit nuts? Shakira even manages to drop in the word “lycanthropy”, which according to our friends at dictionary.com refers to a “delusion in which one imagines oneself to be a wolf or other wild animal”. This offers a clue as to the song’s subject matter, but whatever the hell it’s about, it’s certainly packed with ear-snagging lyrics. Our favourite couplet? “To look for a single man I’ve got me a special radar / Fire department’s on hotline in case I get in trouble later.”
Time for some final thoughts. This is the sort of track that will sound terrific on the radio, terrific on the dancefloor and especially terrific as you strut into work with your iPod cranked up to full whack on a hot summer’s morning. In short, it’s an absolute smash.” Thanks to Digital Spy!

Mexico City’s mayor wants to deploy pop stars Bono and Shakira to help put the Mexican capital back on the map as a tourist destination after the H1N1 flu outbreak scared away visitors. Marcelo Ebrard, a leftist with presidential aspirations, said he has written to the U2 frontman, the Colombian singer and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates to ask them to endorse a publicity campaign to restore the city’s image. The swine flu epidemic emptied Mexico City’s normally chaotic streets for days on end, and the city is still haunted by images of face masks and shuttered bars and restaurants. “We are facing the worst economic emergency in the recent history of Mexico City. Its results may be tragic for thousands of families whose incomes, jobs and investments are at risk,” Ebrard said in the letters. The celebrities, all known for their efforts to combat poverty and disease around the world, are being asked to put their face behind Ebrard’s campaign with a visit to Mexico City. The new flu, which has killed 74 people in Mexico and sparked fears of a pandemic, prompted authorities to shut chunks of the economy for five days and close schools for two weeks to curb contagion, in a huge blow to businesses. Mexico City receives 12 million tourists every year, 25 percent of them foreigners loaded up with foreign currency. Ebrard, who has made his mark with popular leisure schemes such as bicycle lanes, city water parks and an end-year ice rink, has already launched a television campaign to lure back Mexican tourists to the capital, featuring good-looking actors shopping and riding double-decker city tour buses.
In the face of a decades-long insurgency, the international singing star Shakira has been back to her roots in Colombia to help disadvantaged children get the education they deserve. The BBC’s Rajesh Mirchandani went with her. To travel with multi-million-selling pop star Shakira is to travel behind tinted windows, on private planes and on Shakira time – always at least an hour behind schedule and always stopping for autographs and photos. It involves long waits while she has hair and make-up touch-ups before emerging from cars, planes and buildings. But at the centre of the superstar entourage is a young Colombian who is disarmingly friendly and passionately eloquent about education. And education was the reason we travelled with Shakira to the north-west border province of Choco, deep in the Colombian jungle. It is remote and poor. And it’s an area devastated by the civil conflict that has ravaged the country for nearly half a century, forcing three million Colombians to flee their homes. We were heading to a school Shakira has funded. She told me: “One-hundred per cent of our kids that we have in our school here have been displaced or have families that have fled their home towns.” Shakira has been here several times and the reaction is always the same: frenzied rapture. She is surrounded by exuberant children as she makes her way down dirty, pot-holed streets, past wooden shacks and open sewers. But the welcome she gets is not just because she’s a famous pop star. In an area of grinding poverty she provides a lifeline. Continue…
